Around this time last year, I knew exactly what I wanted to be doing. Well not exactly, but somewhat. I finally discovered that I had a passion for helping women realize their true beauty. I figured I should get experience by joining a nonprofit whose mission is similar to my own. I did a simple Google search, and that’s when I found the Peek-A-Boo Pretty Girl Foundation.
I knew this was the organization for me when I read this statement on their website: The mission of PeekABoo PrettyGirl is to promote confidence and high self esteem within young girls and women through the principles of leadership, health, spiritual wellness, fashion, and cosmetic beauty. PABPG is all about empowering women through mentoring programs, cosmetic donations, and affordable beauty products.
If you know me, you know that I am very shy and usually wait for others to approach me. But at this point, I knew I had to be a part of this team. I reached out to the founder through email and got a timely response saying that they would be glad to have me. I started out writing health and wellness posts for their blog, which really stimulated my love of writing and led me to be more active on my personal blog.
I have had to exercise many skills as a member of PABPG: writing, communication, fundraising, sales, public relations, marketing, event planning, health promotion (which is what I’m going to school for). Not only have I been working on skills that are relevant to major, but I have been getting my feet wet in multiple dimensions of the nonprofit world. These experiences will make me so much more marketable to employers, and I am so thankful for that.
My favorite part of being on the team, besides enhancing my resume, is the fact that I have a new family. The girls I have met during my time with PABPG are amazing. They are so talented and diverse, and I love it; everyone brings something unique to the table. The organization has been up and running for 3 years! (I will have been with the team for one year in October) I am so proud of these ladies and what we have accomplished so far. I am thrilled to see what is in store for us in the future.
You guys may laugh at me, but writing this post brings a song to mind. “Git Up, Git Out” by Outkast featuring Goodie Mob: “You need to get up, get out, and get somethin’. Don’t let the days of your life pass by.” If there’s something that you really want, you have to get out there and get it yourself. No one is going to hand it to you on a silver platter. If someone is doing something that you share a passion for, let them know! Most likely, they would love to have your help.
